Week in Review: 9/8/19

Rafael Nadal and Bianca Andreescu win the U.S. Open. AB joins the Patriots, and a full week of NFL and College Football.

NFL Week 1, Key Games:

New England Patriots: 33, Pittsburgh Steelers: 3

An absolutely dominant performance throughout the entire game by the defending champs. Tom Brady spread out the ball exquisitely, throwing for 341 yards and three TD's. The Pats defense gave the Steelers absolutely nothing, especially during the run game, as James Connor led the team with just 21 yards. It was frankly a flawless game for the Pats, and a harsh warning to the rest of the league.

Tennessee Titians: 43, Cleveland Browns: 13

As ESPN put it, "Maybe Marcus Mariota and the Titans deserved all the hype." Odell had 71 yards and Jarvis Landry had 67. Baker Mayfield showed that he is still very young in a three interception performance. Marcus Mariota was flawless on the other side of the ball, and Derrick Henry had 159 total yards.

New Orleans Saints: 30, Houston Texans: 28

Now this was an exciting game. There were three lead changes within the final 50 seconds of the game, ending in a Will Lutz game winning 58 yard field goal (his previous career high was 57 yards). The stars really shone in this matchup. The Watson to Hopkins connection was electric, as was Brees to Thomas.

Green Bay Packers: 10, Chicago Bears: 3

The season's opener on Thursday Night Football turned out to be a total dud, and one of the most boring games in a while. It was clear Mitch Trubisky and the Bears could do nothing on offense. Aaron Rodgers was not stellar either against a very impressive Bears defense, but his TD pass to Jimmy Graham proved to be the difference.

U.S. Open:

🇪🇸(2) Rafael Nadal: 7 6 5 4 6

🇷🇺(5) Daniil Medvedev: 5 3 7 6 4

Medvedev put up quite the fight after losing the first two sets, but Rafael Nadal is Rafael Nadal, and was not going to be beaten. He is now just one Grand Slam title away from tying Roger Federer for the all time lead

🇺🇸(8) Serena Williams: 3 5

🇨🇦(15) Bianca Andreescu: 6 7

Serena looked tired and behind at the start of the match, and was down five games to zero in the second set, but fought her way back to make things interesting. Andreescu becomes the first Canadian singles player to win a Grand Slam.
